Title: Masterpiece Painting in Fine Arts Library
Posted by: Library Contact on November 21, 2000 at 12:19 PM.A large oil painting has just been hung in the Fine Arts Library. It is "Venus, cupid and bacchus" painted c. 1715 by Gregorio Lazzarini (1655-1730).
This painting was given to UBC in 1940 by Mrs. Eva Bene. It has since been extensively and expensively restored by the Canadian Conservation Institute. It hung for some time in the Fine Arts Library and was then removed to be included in an exhibition of Venetian painting at the National Gallery of Canada. Since its return to UBC, it has been hanging in the Morris and Belkin Gallery on campus.
Gregorio Lazzarini was a Venetian painter much patronized by Venetian nobility. He headed an important school of painting and is best remembered for being the teacher of Giambattista Tiepolo.
Do drop by Fine Arts Library sometime and enjoy it.
