There are far more private companies than public
companies: about 98% of all companies are private.
Private companies are more challenging to investigate than public companies as they do not issue public financial statements or annual reports. To quote Forbes: "Private means private." Be prepared to work to find available information.
This guide gathers together several key resources, and is intended to be a quick guide to researching private companies. The Internet Prospector produced a 1999 guide entitled How to Research Private Companies, which covers US information. |

Corporate registries |
In the US, depending on the state in which it is registered, a private company may have
to file annual reports with the Secretary of State, although the actual reports may or may not be available on the web. The offices may also
provide articles of incorporation, and other filings.
